Why is this important at all?

Isn't it kind of formulaic to have a programmed response to people's questions?  What about being led by the Spirit?

What is the purpose of ITSYS (If They Say, You Say)?
The purpose of ITSYS is to equip Christians to answer the many difficult questions that come up when sharing their faith.  After years of sharing the Gospel with others, and years of training others to do the same, I have seen that many people, Christian and non-Christian alike ask the same questions over and over; questions like: "If God is good and all powerful, how can their be so much suffering in the world?", "How can God be loving and send people to Hell forever?", "Isn't it good enough to just be a good person?", and "What about the Hindu or Buddhist child?  Do they go to hell?"
These are important questions that need to be addressed.

Why is this important at all?
For several reasons:
1.) We are commanded to prepare ourselves to give a reasonable response to questions concerning the faith (1 Peter 5:13).
2.) Because having answers strengthens our own faith. C.S. Lewis said "My heart cannot rejoice in something my mind rejects as false." For many Christians, they want to be passionate about the Christian faith but their lingering doubts unconsciously prohibit them from doing so. Remember, we are required to love God with all of our "heart, soul, mind, and strength."
3.) Having answers emboldens us in our witness.  Many Christians do not share their faith with anyone for fear of not being able to adequately answer their questions.  When we are familiar with solid answers to the most common questions, it equips us and encourages us to talk to others.
4.) Some people have legitimate intellectual barriers to accepting Jesus.  We need to be able to gently but confidently deal with those barriers.

Isn't it kind of formulaic to have a programmed response to people's questions?  What about being led by the Spirit?
Well, yes and no.  These responses will be somewhat formulaic in that there is an appropriate response to a particular question.  If a person asks you, "What is 2 + 2?"  Any response but "4" would be inappropriate.  However, remember that what you find here is meant to be a guideline for how you might respond.  There might be several routes to take with any given question.  ITSYS is meant to be a starting point toward dealing with these questions.  Learning how to tackle these issues from all sides is a lifelong pursuit.

In addition, having intelligent answers (studying apologetics) should never be seen as the final solution for Christian witnessing.  It is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit on a person that saves them.  Our answers and efforts are simply tools that God uses to bring down walls between the person and God's Spirit.
